Launching the Imagination CH 14: Narrative and Non-Narrative

Story telling is one of the oldest forms of sharing information. Stories communicate understanding, provide inspiration and can increase self-awareness. Multiple image structures can be used to express complex ideas in both narrative and non-narrative videos. The 3 most common multiple image structures are group, series and sequence. Filmmakers use the beat, scene, sequence and act to create a screenplay. Non-narrative approaches are categorical, rhetorical and abstract. Establishing boundaries develops effective stories. Boundaries like deciding on the beginning and when the story ends, who the story is about, what is the underlying theme and the setting. A change in style can really affect communication. Ideas and emotions can be communicated through a straightforward series of causes and effects or through a series of seemingly unrelated images. The opening and closing, personal perspective and characters used can make or break a story. TV advertisements can present ideas in less than 15 seconds 8 different approaches!!
In my final project I will be using the group multiple image structure. I will group by shape and subject matter. In the end it will be narrative like. It is the battle between order and disorder.

Explanation for final project

This piece is a combination of the Norman Installation sound piece and the concept Ritual in Transfigured time. My ritual is cleaning while humming the same mindless tune over and over again. These acts take my ind to a far away place, transfiguring me states of chaos to calm chaos to calm etc. i want this video to be surreal and dreamlike/nightmarish. To create that effect I am going to have several layers of video that come in and out of focus depending on which layer is most dominant at a particular moment. In the beginning is the calm state and the scenes flow in and out of each other in slow fading transitions. In the second half is the anxious state where transitions are more abrupt. I want the video to be cyclical. If successful the end should flow right back to the beginning.

Moment forming and MOMENTE by Stockhausen

A moment in music is when characteristics like the speed of the sound and the region of a sound are constant. When these characteristics change it creates a new moment. Music is almost like the interactions of people in a room. There is a mood and a quality to the people that may change with a sudden event or change slowly as people enter and leave. The degree of change in music can be composed and it is also a characteristic of music that actually changes. Stockhausen composed a piece called MOMENTE that focused in on the changes in moments with a controlled randomness. There are 3 main kinds of moments: M moments which are melodic creating Heterphony sound, K moments creating Homophonic music and is made of male voices in the choir in combination with precission instruments and D moments which is the duration creating silence and polyphony which is made of female voices and is melodic. These three moments can mix in countless different combinations to create a feeling of randomness. The fourth moment is the I moment which serves to neutralize the other moments.
It is strange to think that something that sounds so random like music can of ten resemble, is actually created with a formula beyond notes. Instead it is made of moments strung together. Each moment is crafted and each moment creates a series of moments which is music. Controlled randomness of distribution creates atmospheres within a musical piece.

Group Project

What I was thinking of doing was getting the sheet music for old hymns in both spanish and english because not only do I not know the words well , but I cant read music. Maybe our groups theme can be about being lost and how we deal with confusion? Hymnals are things of the past and a lot of churches don't use them anymore. Its also about traditions and how this one will not be passed down to the next generation. I dont know. Just a thought. Im also bringing my sketchbook.
